Scottie Musicians

One of the most delightful and whimsical themes to be found in MiJ Scottie collecting is that of the Scottie dog musicians. Both band sets and individual pieces were manufactured, and the ones depicted here are but a sampling of the variety available. Boston Terrier musicians (see below) were also common subjects.

The Scottie violinist on the far left was also manufactured in a smaller version as a salt & pepper set.

The Scottie on the far right is actually stamped "Germany." It was either a model for other MiJ musicians of similar style and coloring or it was manufactured in Japan and then exported to Germany under a foreign trademark.

Quite often German pieces were the "original" models for Japanese manufactured ceramic goods. We know, for instance, that the Japanese copied either directly or in style figurines bearing the mark of Hummel and Erphilia. In addition, orange glazes for Scotties were a common trait of early 20th century German ceramics, especially character pieces such as the musicians.

These two members of a Boston Terrier band sport the trademark bright orange of an MiJ figurine. We've also seen these orange-clad band members in the form of rabbits.

The two end figures are part of a set of four-inch high Wheaten Scottie musicians, while the central figure is from a band set of shorter Wheatens. Both bands feature at least six musicians, including a conductor. Even though Wheaten Scotties are a rarity among MiJ figurines, they feature prominently among the musicians.
