MiJ/Scotties logo

Introduction

We began as Scottie collectors first, but soon found that the Made in Japan portion of our collection was growing the fastest. MiJ Scotties were common and affordable items, but beyond that we were both delighted by the whimsical nature of the figurines.

From an animated Scottie playing the violin to a yellow-and-green-striped Scottie holding toothpicks, we couldn't help but laugh. MiJ Scotties appeal to the child in us and we delight in seeing them every day. Although some of the finer pieces are kept safe in display cabinets, many other of our collectibles are scattered all about the house, holding everything from pencils and pens to cotton swabs. This is as it should be because so many MiJ Scotties were intended to be useful as well as decorative.

We created this page in order to share our enthusiasm for this area of collecting and to offer a reference guide to anyone who not only enjoys Scottie collectibles, but also MiJ ceramics.

Recommended references

Since there is no single reference book on Japanese Scotties, the dedicated MiJ/Scottie collector will need to assemble a number of books for cross-referencing the two categories. Below are our recommendations for basic reference works on MiJs and Scotties.

The Collector's Guide to Made in Japan Ceramics
(Series of 3 volumes)

By Carole Bess White

The Carole Bess White books are our hands-down favorites because of her extensive history of MiJ manufacturing and the in-depth identification of trademarks. That, plus the beautiful photography of a wide range of pieces, makes for fascinating reading. Highly recommended!
